J.A. Katz & Associates (JAK&A) is the successor to a consulting business started by Jerome as a student in Memphis and sold in preparation for his move North to finish his education. Operating since 1976, it builds on the network of experts Jerome knows through his work around the world. Originally it focused on consulting to entrepreneurial firms.
These days Jerome consults around business issues primarily to students and faculty at Saint Louis University. He continues to consult to universities, colleges, foundations, NGOs and governments on entrepreneurial development and entrepreneurship education through his consulting company J.A. Katz & Associates, and he is available as a speaker on a wide range of entrepreneurial topics.
His consulting is based on his experience in business, academia and government. Prof. Katz’s government service included work as a member of the Department of Agriculture’s Small Business Innovation Research national review panel, as well as staff work at the national level on the President’s National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, at the state level as a statewide Associate Director for Research for the Missouri Small Business Development Centers, and at a local level as associate director of the Urban Renewal Demonstration Project in Memphis. He has been a consultant or researcher on entrepreneurial development for the Kauffman, Coleman, GE, NFIB and Soros Foundations, as well as Sweden’s ESBRI, the ILO, the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies, the Committee of 200, and the NSF. He has worked with entrepreneurial companies and campuses throughout the US as well as in Israel, the West Bank, Sweden, Italy, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Croatia, and Singapore. He is senior author of the new McGraw Hill text Entrepreneurial Small Business, and edits books series in entrepreneurship for Emerald and Sage. An author of nearly 100 papers and articles in entrepreneurship, he sits on the editorial boards of Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Technoentrepreneurship, and five other scholarly journals.
As a speaker, he has presented to professional audiences in the US, Sweden, Italy, Brazil, Croatia and Kuwait on topic ranging from how to start a business to e-commerce, securing angel investment, breaking into the US market, creating environments and cultures supportive of entrepreneurship, recognizing and celebrating a nation’s inherent entrepreneurial strengths, entrepreneurial thinking, and the fallacy of believing in an entrepreneurial personality. Tying together everyday experiences, cartoons, commercials, and his own hard-earned wisdom, his presentations are memorable and accessible to everyone.
